Quik Cleat - Organization System
Build modular custom tool-holders in less than 5-minutes each!
In this week's article I want to show you how to build a simple, strong, and great looking system that allows you to organize tools in as little as 5-minutes each! I built and mounted all of the plywood shelves, hangers and tool holders shown below in about an hour using the Quik Cleat system and some scrap plywood I had laying around.
Organizing my tool wall has been one of the most rewarding and time-saving changes that I've made to my shop. Imagine having all of the tools that you use the most within arms reach. I built all of the plywood holders shown in the picture below in about one hour using the Shop Hacks Quick Cleat System. It is simple, super-strong, durable and you can have custom tool holders ready in as little as 10 minutes using this system.
Frequently asked questions:
1. Are they easy to install?
YES! Easy installation is one of the main benefits of the Quik Cleat System. Cut a piece of plywood then install 3 screws per side and your shelf , tool holder or custom project is ready to hang on any 3/4" French cleat.
2. Are they strong and will they hold up?
Yes. See pictures below with one pair of Quik Cleats supporting 60 lbs! The material used is very tough, durable and will not become brittle with time. Use them as-is with up to 25 lbs per set or add simple wood stiffeners using 4 screws to support up to 60 lbs..
3. How many come with each set?
You get 6 Quik Cleats with each set purchased. That's enough to build 3 tool holders, 3 shelves or to mount 3 vertical panels to mount other items like a paper towel holder or some of the other custom holders shown below.
4. Why don't you use plywood and make your own?
I did that for my first prototypes. I wanted to make a system that takes the hassle out of getting organized by doing the hardest part for you. These look great and you can have a set of tools organized in as little as 5 minutes in some cases. I built all of the plywood tool holders shown in the pictures here in about 1 hour. Organization made easy!

Every tool holder in the photos on this page was quickly mounted using the Shop Hacks Quik Cleat system.
Step 1 - Cut a rectangular panel to the size you need and add any holes, brackets or lips and labels to the panel as needed to secure the tools you plan to store with it. I made these two panels in about 15 minutes to mount my jigsaw, glasses, circular saw, drill, driver and router.
Step 2 - Mark the holes on each end using the Quik Cleat as a guide, predrill the mounting holes and secure with screws.
Step 3 - Optional: Add vertical stiffeners (vertical piece) if you plan to place loads over 25 lbs on the panel.
You will need a 3/4" wall cleat with a 45-degree bevel at the top to mount the Quik Cleats. The wall cleat can extend the full length of your wall or it can be just a little longer than the tool holder. I ran 4 rows of cleats along my wall which allows me to move tool and material holders around as I figure out ways to make my workflow more efficient. I've rearranged my tool wall three times in the last few years. Each time I have improved my workflow which has helped me enjoy working in my shop even more.
Three types of Quick Cleats are offered allowing you limitless variations to create your own modular tool holders.
The Flush Shelf Brackets are great for making horizontal shelves. As you can see, the Quik Cleats are super strong, holding over 60 lbs with ease. The Flush Shelf Brackets and the Angled Tool Holder Brackets include extra holes that allow you to mount stiffening supports if you need extra load capacity.
The Angled Tool Holder Brackets are a more efficient way to secure more tools while using less wall space. The angled holder also makes it much easier to see and grab your tool since it is already tilted toward you.
The Vertical Panel Mount Plates offer a third option to mount various tools and materials using a simple vertical plate. The paper towel holder and tape holder shown below are just two examples.
In the "How to organize your tools without feeling overwhelmed" article, I ran the numbers and found that I save between 40 and 80 hours per year by having my tool wall organized in a way that allows access to tools within arms reach vs. having to open a drawer or cabinet to get to them. That's 80 extra hours to spend building, making and fixing things vs. hunting for tools and picking them up.
